Diabetes

Diabetes can cause eye problems and may lead to blindness. People with diabetes are more at risk for having eye disorders than those who don’t. However, the secret to avoiding these disorders is to keep your diabetes under control. It is very important to have an annual dilated eye examination, as this allows your doctor to be able to look inside your eye and actually see the blood vessels where complications occur. Thus, if it is determined that your control is not adequate and you are developing diabetic retinopathy, a consultation can be initiated with your endocrinologist to avoid any further complications. Our practice also has a large network of surgical sub-specialists with whom we co-manage patients and we can send you to some of the top vitreo-retinal specialists if necessary.

It’s also important to note that people with diabetes are 40% more likely to develop glaucoma and 60% more likely to develop cataracts. Again, emphasizing the importance of having an annual eye examination. Often these visits are covered by your routine vision plan, if you have one, as well as your major medical health insurance plan.
